Coppercoat and Osmosis

Coppercoat & osmosis treatments

COPPERCOAT  As an alternative to a normal antifoul application, Mylor Yacht Harbour’s Marine Team can also offer the application of the longer lasting Coppercoat system.  A combination of a special water based epoxy resin and ultrafine copper, Coppercoat is an extremely effective and strong antifoul.  Available in one full strength hard wearing version, the non eroding epoxy is kinder to the environment than its self eroding competitors and can deter growth for ten years or more.

OSMOSIS TREATMENT  Osmosis is the term used to describe the blistering that can be found on some GRP boat hulls.  This blistering is caused by water molecules diffusing through the gel coat and laminate and then condensing in small voids, air pockets and microcracks within the resin used to create the laminate.  The resulting solution created becomes water absorbing and as the process continues, the pressure becomes too high for the surrounding material and a blister forms.

That’s the bad news.  The good news is that Mylor Yacht Harbour’s GRP Specialists can treat the blisters caused by osmosis.  As part of the overall treatment process, we use the HOTVAC system of heated pads on the hull to remove moisture and cure uncured resins before replacing the old gel coat with epoxy resin, forming an almost impermeable barrier.
